Chinese Ice Dancers Under Probe Following Holding Prop Weapon during Event
The International Skating Union are conducting an investigation following a pair of Chinese ice dancers appeared holding what looked like a replica weapon at an international skating competition.
Television footage captured the skaters waiting with a large toy shaped like a rocket labeled “DF-61” as they awaited their scores at the “kiss and cry” zone during the event.
This model represents a new Chinese-made ground-launched intercontinental ballistic missile designed for transporting atomic warheads, which was unveiled at a military parade recently.
“The ISU have acknowledged that an inappropriate plush item seems to have been among those tossed onto the ice by audience members after a performance during the competition,” the ISU commented via a release.
“The soft toy was subsequently handled by the athletes who had just performed. The ISU apologizes for the incident and will investigate further.”
Ren and Xing finished eighth out of ten teams during the ice dancing competition, which was won by Madison Chock and Evan Bates of the United States.
